Applications for scholarships up to $25,000 are being accepted from undocumented youth who will be first-time college students or who will transfer to a four-year university to finish a bachelor’s degree, TheDream.US, a national organization with $32 million to help young people, announced on Sept. 4.

The scholarships – to which individuals can apply online through Sunday, Oct. 26 by 11:59 p.m. (Central Standard Time) – can be used to pay for college tuition, as well as books and fees. The scholarship amount depends on a young person’s financial need and the cost to attend a university or college.

This application round comes more than two years after President Barack Obama announced his executive order for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which lets young people who were brought without immigration papers by their parents to the United States apply to stay for a certain period of time.

The students are often referred to as “DREAMers.”

Scholarship recipients need to be considered as in-state students, in terms of tuition, maintain a grade point average of 3.0, stay enrolled in a college or university that is a partner of TheDream.US and keep their DACA status.

“We, as a nation, have an opportunity to leverage the investment we have already made in these young, highly-motivated men and women by offering a scholarship fund that will support them in joining our next generation of talented health care providers, educators, accountants, scientists, software developers and social workers,” Candy Marshall, president of TheDream.US, said in a statement.

“They are part of our country’s future.”

TheDream.US, which now has $32 million, launched with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Other key supporters include Donald Graham, CEO of Graham Holdings Co., Amanda Bennett, his wife and a writer, Henry Munoz III, a philanthropist, and Carlos Gutierrez, a former U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

Maria Gabriela “Gaby” Pacheco, who came from Ecuador as a child and advocated for the DREAM Act, is TheDream.US program director. She was active with the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Mark Zuckerberg, a co-founder of Facebook, also has lent his support to the scholarship group.

TheDream.US has posted guideline information, as well an application link, FAQs and stories from scholarship recipients.

Partner colleges and universities include: Arizona State University (online), Phoenix College (Arizona), California State University, Long Beach, Broward College (Florida), Florida International University, Miami Dade College, Bronx Community College (New York), Hunter College (New York), University of Texas at El Paso, University of Texas – Pan American and George Mason University (Virginia).
