WA Atty. Gen'l. to Address Fraud Against Latinos
Considering a legal career? Washington’s Latino residents are targets for a variety of scams including predatory loans, wire transfer fraud and notary publics representing themselves as lawyers. To address this growing problem, Attorney General Rob McKenna will convene the second of two statewide Latino Consumer Education Conferences Friday, Oct. 20, in Yakima.

Expected participants include: Pastor Herrera, Jr., Los Angeles County Department of Consumer Affairs Director, Rob McKenna, Washington State Attorney General, Raul Almeida, Hanford Patrol Captain, Michael Sotelo, Washington State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President, and Bishop Carlos A. Sevilla, S.J., Catholic Diocese of Yakima.

The colloquium will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.: Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at the Yakima Convention Center, 10 North 8th St, Yakima, WA.

Fraud experts agree that Hispanic consumers are more at risk of being swindled than other consumers. The Attorney General’s Office Consumer Protection Division records and mediates complaints received by Washington consumers regardless of citizenship status. However, it’s believed that many scams go unreported.

This conference will bring together partners in the areas of consumer services, consumer advocacy, and business to highlight proven strategies and develop new outreach methods. Participants will develop specific recommendations to help the Attorney General’s Office be more effective at providing useful consumer information to Latino communities.
